Is Quantity Surveying a Profession in Sri Lanka

This is a question I used to ask my colleagues at various forums. “Yes” was the answer of the most. A few had no straight answer while nobody said “No”. But, by looking at this from the perspective of general public, most of the times I feel it is not....!

What the general public knows as Quantity Surveying is a set of activities (known as a preparation of BOQ and Estimate) that anybody with a little bit exposure to construction and O/L mathematics (or lesser) can perform. If that level of performance can be achieved without a rigorous training and with a good level of IQ, I wouldn’t call it a profession. Therefore in Sri Lanka, Quantity Surveying is not a profession yet.

Where is the problem? It is simply there with the clients’ knowledge. They don’t know the true value of Quantity Surveying. Why, because they are not been delivered with the true value of Quantity Surveying. So, it is time for us to think how to overcome this.

Just think, if a stranger brows through your facebook wall, the network of friends, photographs, etc. will know a lot about you: how you look, your personality, your best friends, your birthday, what you did last weekend, your school, your favorites, and a lot more. You may think this is not possible for a stranger (i.e. someone not in your friends list). Well, read this

Think, someday, someone hacks into your facebook account, change both the password and email address for password recovery, and pretends to be you. Your friends will never know and will believe it’s you. Because he’ll continue to use the same style of language as you did, use the same nicknames for friends, use the same abbreviations as you did, and so on. And the worst thing is that you can’t warn your friends, because you will have no access to your facebook account anymore. Just imagine what that someone can do. How about framing you for a crime? How about linking yourself to some terrorist network, and get your friends to do some little things they want to get done?

So, my dear friends, this is why I opt to delete my account. So, now you can’t see me in your network. But, you should know that, I checked recently and my profile is still there, it is only invisible to you all (but probably not for hackers and police). So, I am not capable of eliminating the threat howmuch I try. But, I feel I have minimized it to the possible extent only.
